The way we say things, whether out loud or in our heads is really telling. It reflects our outlook of the situation and can influence how we feel about it.
What if we made a concious effort to rephrase our words and thoughts to be more positive?
I know it’s not realistic to be Mary Poppins positive all the time, but even if we did it in certain situations it could make such a difference and cut through some of the negative thinking that depletes our confidence.
Here are a few examples:
Contacting recruitment agencies “I am looking for a job/work”
Rephrase it to “I am available for work and would like to discuss opportunities/my experience with you”
Sounds a lot like someone who is confident in their abilities doesn’t it?
Going on a date
“I hope he/she likes me”
What if this was rephrased to“I hope we get along”.
Because that’s what you actually want to happen, to get along, have a good time and see where it goes.
Applying/competing for something
“I hope I am good enough”
Instead how about “I want to show them how good I am”
Like in the first example, the emphasis is on what you can do rather than someone else validating if you are good enough.
Think about the things you say out loud or in your head, particularly things that don’t make you feel good or make you feel less confident, and try rephrasing them in future. Maybe try one at a time.
